Hītori – Our Story of Ngāti Manomano and Taumata o te Rā Marae

Ngāti Manomano, of Ngāti Raukawa, was born in 1983 when our elders shared a vision of creating a new hapū and establishing a marae, a place for the descendants of our eponymous ancestress to stand and follow the practices of our tūpuna.

They faced trials and tribulations in a time when people and processes were less tolerant. However, they persisted, they held true, so that with the help of many whanaunga throughout the iwi and beyond, they prevailed.

The vision came to life on 10 February 1996, when Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu led her people onto Taumata o te Rā Marae to open the wharenui, Manomano.

Marae Governance

Taumata o te Rā is governed by our Trustees Committee, with day-to-day operations entrusted to the Marae Committee.
