Hītori – Our Story
Te Tikanga Marae, originally established around the 1870s, was first built at Onepūehu, near the original mouth of the Waituna Stream within Te Reureu lands. Over time, the marae was relocated to its current site at Tokorangi.
The marae is home to the hapū of Ngāti Waewae and Ngāti Pikiahu, who together are known as Ngāti Pikiahu Waewae. These hapū represent the interwoven whakapapa of two iwi: Ngāti Waewae is a hapū of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Pikiahu is affiliated to Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga. This dual heritage reflects the deep ancestral connections and shared stewardship of Te Tikanga Marae, which stands as a symbol of unity, identity, and continuity for both iwi.

– Bookings & Facilities
Te Tikanga Marae welcomes bookings for a wide range of gatherings that honour both community and tradition. Located at 817 Tokorangi Road, overlooking the Te Reureu valley, the Marae provides a setting that blends cultural significance with natural beauty. From the wharenui to the wharekai, our facilities are designed to support hui, wānanga, tangihanga, weddings, school visits, and community celebrations.
Two whakataukī are central to Te Tikanga Marae and serve as guiding markers of identity and connection:
Kimihia he tikanga hei hanga whare koropū.
Te paepae tonga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa, te timatanga hoki o Ngāti Raukawa ki te tonga.
These whakataukī remind us that Te Paepae-tonga is both a geographical threshold and a cultural bridge—linking Ngāti Tūwharetoa in the north with Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga in the south. Every event held here is enriched by that legacy, acknowledging mana, whakapapa, and the shared histories of our people.
Guests are asked to respect the tikanga of the Marae, including protocols for pōwhiri, the use of the wharenui, and shared kai in the wharekai. The committee can guide you through these practices to ensure your event upholds the values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and whanaungatanga (connection).
For all bookings and enquiries, please complete the form below. A representative from Te Tikanga Marae will be in touch to confirm availability and assist with any specific needs for your gathering.
